SaunaLife™ Saunas
A barrel sauna of a different sort...
Barrel Saunas are all the rage in America. The true sauna aficionado might disparage them but that hasn't stopped them from becoming incredibly popular. And there must be something to it because most owners of these types of saunas swear by them. Their level of customer satisfaction is through the roof.
To be sure, there are some negative points to other Barrel Saunas on the market, but our Estonian suppliers have taken those complaints to heart and have mitigated all of them with their designs.
One complaint that you hear is that they leak. With any tongue and groove or ball and socket design there are spaces between the staves that make up the roof and walls of the barrel. And the heat inside the sauna tends to shrink the wood of other brands of barrel saunas which can cause small gaps to occur.
But the top half of every SaunaLife™ Barrel Sauna has a black bituminous shingle covering, and the sauna is constructed of thermally treated wood (more on that below) so no matter how hot you crank up the heat they will never leak rain into the sauna or heat out of the sauna like other Barrel Saunas will.
Bathing comfort cannot be overlooked when investing in a barrel sauna. The diameter
of the barrel and the bench/backrest configuration must be considered. Barrels with a small diameter may be priced lower (less materials),
but the tradeoffs are door height, bench comfort, and headroom.
Other barrels are uncomfortable because the inside curvature of the walls
forces you to sit hunkered over with your spine in an unhealthful position. This is not a problem with our Barrel Saunas.
Every one of them includes ergonomic curved backrests which not only keeps you from having to bathe hunched
over but also offers excellent lumbar support (see specifications sheets). Touch and feel were not ignored when selecting
the knot-free, silky-smooth grade-A Thermo-Aspen seating material designed to hug most any body size.
Another complaint you hear about other Barrel Saunas is that they are too short and you
can't stand up inside one. This is less of a problem with our saunas as they have outside diameters of between
81" and 91" as compared to the typical 72" outside diameter of many competing Barrel Saunas.
And if you'd prefer to stand on a flat rather than a curved floor, we offer an optional Floor Kit that can accommodate you.
Another issue true sauna enthusiasts have with barrel saunas is their bench heights. Anyone accustomed to using a genuine Scandinavian style sauna will tell you that the upper bench in a sauna with bi-level benches is the only place to be, because up near the ceiling is where the best heat is.
Having bi-level benches has another benefit, too. It's common for there to be a significant level of heat stratification in a normally operating Scandinavian style sauna. The lower bench will typically be 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the upper bench.
While this difference is what makes the upper bench so attractive to a hard core sauna enthusiast, not every bather appreciates that level of heat, and that means that people with different preferences can enjoy a sauna with bi-level benches at the same time.
By design, however, the typical barrel sauna has only one level of benches fairly low down. And in fact, that's even the case with all but two of the models of barrel saunas in our range. But two models - the Model EE6G and the EE8G - have managed to overcome even this limitation.
The Model EE8G has extra high benches with a narrow footrest in front of them, and the Model EE6G might actually be one of the only barrel saunas on the market with bi-level benches.
These two models have an exceptionally large outside diameter of 91", which is what makes such a design possible.
All SaunaLife™ Barrel Saunas are made from thermally modified spruce with benches and backrests made from thermally modified aspen. Thermal modification is a scientific process that's actually been practiced for a couple decades to make outdoor siding for homes. It transforms the wood at the cellular level so it performs exceptionally well outdoors.
The process employs specialized kilns to remove the sugars from the wood. The result is a material that is exceptionally stable. It will expand and contract significantly less than wood that is not modified, so you don't get the gaps in the wood that are so common with cedar saunas.
Because the thermal modification cooks the sugars out of wood, it becomes very resistant to rot and decay. With non-modified wood these sugars are what feed mold and bacteria. This makes thermally modified wood rot resistant and much longer lasting. Thermally modified wood is expected to have a life span that is twice that of western red cedar!
The same also true for insect resistance. The sugars that feed termites and ants have been changed, permanently, in the thermal modification process. The result is a material that is far less appetizing to insect infestation.
SaunaLife™ Barrel Saunas are available in a variety of sizes including options for a spacious rear window or an all glass front wall. All models are usually in stock and ship within a week of the order being placed. All models include...
